A Unique Experience:
Would you like to be part of a unique experience that will also make a positive difference to the quality of life of Special Needs Children? Then join Variety’s 2008 fundraising motoring event, the 2008 Variety Bash and become a ‘Basher’. The Variety Bash is our largest road event where the focus is firmly placed on having fun. It’s a hilariously madcap event - involving outrageously themed cars and participants where cheating & bribery are encouraged and you can even get fined for taking it too seriously! A host of organized and spontaneous events and fantastic entertainment enhance the great community sprit and camaraderie the Bash engenders in its participants.
As with all Variety events, the Bash has a serious side. Its primary objective is to raise money for children in our community with a wide range of special needs. The money raised goes towards minibuses for children’s organisations, special wheelchair swings for council playgrounds, life saving medical treatment, assistance for school books, specialist communication devices such as Dynavox machines, mobility equipment like wheelchairs and second skin splints, entire hospital wards, neo-natal transport ambulances, and public education campaigns. As an international volunteer organisation with very few administrative staff, it is crucial that we distribute our funds efficiently. The Bash nationally raises $6-7M each year, and more than $86M since its beginning in 1985. More than 90% of funds raised go directly to fund our vital work.
By taking part in this wonderful social event, not only will you have the time of your life but you will be instrumental in helping bring sunshine into the lives of many very special children.
The Route:
On Thursday August 14, 2008 the Bash departs from Melbourne. Day one will see you travel the winding picturesque roads to Corowa, a small town situated on the Murray river opposite the wine growing area of Rutherglen. Lunch will be at Winton Motor Raceway where the bash will get to see first hand the track where the V8 Supercars regularly compete.
On day two the Bash travels through the centre of NSW with lunch at Lake Wyangan near Griffith and dinner at Nyngan (Captain Melways will tell you where that is).
The Bash then travels to the northern NSW town of Moree via lunch at the school at Carinda.
From there the Bash heads northwest on its fourth day to dinner and a layday in Charleville, Queensland via lunch at the school in Dhirranbandi. Charleville has a number of attractions including the Cosmos Centre, the RFDS base and a school of Distance Eduction.
Barcaldine is the next destination point for the Bash. Day six will see the Bash head north by northwest to the heart of the Queensland outback. Lunch is at Adavale before travelling through the spectacular Listowell Valley and finishing near the ‘Tree of Knowledge’ in the birthplace of the Australian Labour Party.
From Barcaldine the Bash heads East finishing day seven in the town of Emerald. More spectacular scenery and a roadside lunch along the Dawson Development road takes us into Springsure and ultimately, the centre of the Queensland coal fields.
Day eight sees the Bash leave the mining behind and head to the coast. Rydges Capricorn Resort is the venue for the end of the bash, with the Bash spending two days there. The first day will be a games day, with presentation of finishers awards and the big presentation dinner. The second day will be a layday with a big beach party to finish off the event. Entrants can enjoy a number of activities at Rydges, or travel over to Great Keppel Island, or visit the wetlands and beaches on Rydges property or play a round or two of golf on Rydges championship course
The Cars:
To be eligible to enter, your vehicle or ‘Bash Car’ must be at least 30 years old, rolling on each year. Any car presented at Mobile Workshop Day for the 2008 Vic Bash must have a body plate identifying it as been made at some time in or prior to 1978. In addition to the year, there will be some new regulations addressing the exclusion of certain models of cars and some other technical requirements, particularly regarding engine modifications Also, an attractively themed vehicle, regardless of the age, may be accepted at the Bash Committee’s discretion. At all times consult the Bash Operations Manager before purchasing a vehicle.
The Entry Fee:
A minimum contribution of $7550 is required to enter the Bash. This comprises of a $550 (including GST) deposit and $7000 of contributions. The Bash has prizes and awards for higher levels of fundraising, but it goes without saying, the more we raise, the more we are able to enrich the lives of Special Needs Children in Victoria.
Giving Special Kids a Break:
Your supporters deserve to know where their donations go. Simply put, Variety has been helping children with special needs for 77 years so you can tell them that Variety the children’s charity is the world’s greatest children’s charity and that the express purpose of the 2008 Variety Bash is to raise heaps of money to help children with special needs. Show them the ‘Appeals Granted’ booklets available from our office and they’ll be convinced of how many special needs kids we reach each year. Applications for grants are rigorously scrutinised by our volunteer committees and only goods or services are granted to individuals or organisations to get the most benefit! (not spent on salaries or administration). A great many children have benefited from the funds raised by Variety but there will always be a great deal of children in need of special assistance and we can help reach them with your support.
