Brave little Brock
|
The recent Heart of Variety Ball was a fitting occasion for celebration with Variety chairman Mark Stone announcing over $1 million of grants that went towards improving the lives of Victoria’s Special Needs Children during the 2007/08 financial year.
As the signature event for the children’s charity, the 2008 Heart of Variety Ball was an evening of Hollywood glamour. Guests were dressed to impress as their favourite screen idols as Variety celebrated 80 years of giving and 80 years of the Academy Awards with a spectacular journey through movie history.
Rubbing shoulders with the stars and causing quite a stir on the dance floor was four-year-old guest of honour Brock, along with his brother Rhys and parents Paul and Dee. Like many Australian children, Brock has received assistance from Variety. In December last year, a horrific fire burned through Brock’s family home in Traralgon, leaving Brock with extensive burns to 47% of his body and Dee with burns to 35% of her body... for more> download doc or download pdf

| Tent 77 hits the water |
|
Tent 77’s inaugural Variety Splash, was held on the last weekend in
February was a huge success with participants and sponsors raising
around $140,000.
Undeterred by strong wind and pelting rain, over 20 power and sailboats
including Maxi Ocean Racer Skandia and past America’s Cup Defender
Kookaburra departed Docklands on the Thurs 28th, travelling a three-day
course to Mornington, across the bay to Geelong and back up the coast
to Waterfront City.
Splashers swapped their sea legs for dancing shoes during the stopovers
and nightly functions at Mornington Yacht Club and Royal Geelong Yacht
Club and celebrated in style during the event’s final festivities at
Melbourne Yacht Club Hotel.
CEO Norm Hutton announced on Saturday evening the Splash would be an
annual event in Victoria. “We’re thrilled with the success of the
Variety Splash… the Victorian boating community has really embraced the
meaning behind the event and I’m blown away by the generosity,”
While the Splash finished for most participants on Saturday night,
two luxury cruisers stayed at Docklands to ferry people around the bay
on Sunday as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. Proceeds
from the 45-minute cruises raised even more money for Variety.
Maritimo 60 owners and veteran Road bashers Murray and Julie Nugent
said they had such a great time on the Splash they were happy to make
the experience last one more day.
“Fundraising events like the Splash and the work that Variety carries
out for the children in our community are so worthwhile,” Mr Nugent
said.
“We were delighted to be able to help out by donating the use of our
boat, About Time, for the event – and we had a ball in the process!”
